Shifter Compatibility Shifters are generally compatible with matching derailleurs (i.e., all 8 speed shifters are compatible with 8 speed drivetrains, all 9 speed shifters are compatible with 9 speed drivetrains), with a few notable exceptions. For mountain bikes, the only notable components which are NOT interchangeable are the SRAM ESP series of shifters and derailleurs. SRAM's ESP shifter pulls a different amount of cable than Shimano shifters, thus, the two are incompatible. If you are using a SRAM ESP shifter, you'll need to choose a matching ESP rear derailleur. (Please note that SRAM non-ESP shifters ARE compatible with Shimano derailleurs.) On the road side, components are generally compatible among brands and model lines, with the exception of Shimano Dura-Ace shifters and derailleurs, which must always be used together for optimum shifting. Although the cassette cogs are interchangeable betwen Dura-Ace, Ultegra, 105, etc., Dura-Ace shifters pull a different amount of cable than other Shimano road shifters. For this reason, they should only be used with a matching Dura-Ace rear derailleur. |
