Choosing the right shoes
Road vs. Mountain Shoes
The first decision you'll need to make when choosing a pair
of shoes is road vs. mountain. Road shoes are typically smooth and provide
maximum stiffness for pedaling efficiency, but minimum traction for walking.
Mountain bike shoes are usually more aggresively styled, with a slightly more
flexible sole for occassional walking/hiking and lugs or spikes for grip. Casual
riders, riders using their bike for errands, etc. may prefer to use a mountain
bike shoe (even if the bike is never ridden offroad) for walkability.
Cleat Compatibility
Once you've decided on a shoe type, make sure that your shoe
is compatible with the pedals you plan to use. Almost all road shoes offer
Look style drilling, many road shoes offer SPD style drilling, and a few offer
Time style drilling.
On the mountain side, almost all shoes offer the SPD setup.
Sizing your new shoes
Road shoes are typically measured in European sizes, as are
many mountain bike shoes. Some shoes are measured in American sizes. To choose
the correct size, you'll need to convert your American shoe size into a European
measurement. Please see the charts below to convert. Note that the charts are
specific to the brand of shoe in question.
